Coaching Information

Coaching is an effective way to follow up with teachers after a workshop.  According to research by Bruce Joyce and Beverly Showers on the effectiveness of professional development, conventional approaches to staff development workshops, lectures, demonstrations, etc., show little evidence of transfer into ongoing daily instructional practice. However, when coaching is added to the training design, the level of application of workshop strategies to the classroom setting increased to 90%.

Beth will provide coaching sessions for:

Elementary teachers who have English Language Learners in their classroom.

Secondary teachers who have English Language Learners in their content area class.

Bilingual teachers

Foreign or World language teachers who are implementing the TPRS method

Coaching sessions may include any of the following:

       1.  Demonstration lesson:  Beth will teach the class using the teacher’s goals and objectives for the day.  Other teachers may be invited to observe this demonstration lesson as well.  Beth will need lesson plans and supplemental materials for the lesson at least 48 hours in advance of the demonstration.

     2.  Team teaching:  Beth will team teach a lesson.  Beth will need to communicate with the teacher at least 48 hours in advance to plan the components of this lesson.

      3.  Planning:  Beth will meet with individual teachers or teams of teachers to help them plan an integrated unit or individual lessons that increase comprehensibility, increase student to student interaction,  increase higher order thinking skills, and implement alternative assessments.

       4.  Observation:  Beth will observe teachers with a focus on their English language learners or a focus on the implementation of TPRS.  Click here to view the coaching form for teachers with English Language Learners.  Click here to view the coaching form for TPRS.
